One of the joys of coming to Eva’s Retreat in Cardigan Bay is not just the beautiful views, peaceful workshops, and soulful therapies—it’s the chance to meet some very special residents: Jill’s beloved donkeys, Osain and Dewi.
These gentle animals have been part of the retreat for over seven years. When Jill first welcomed them, they were just eighteen months old. Today, at around eight and a half years, they’ve grown into friendly, playful companions who share the land with guests and bring a special energy to the retreat.
A Day in the Life of Osain and Dewi.
Osain (the lighter one) and Dewi are rarely apart. Wherever one goes, the other follows. Their days are filled with simple joys:
-
Grazing peacefully on the retreat’s fields
-
Galloping playfully up and down the hill
-
Boxing on their back legs like deer
-
Chasing each other in circles, nipping at ankles in play
Watching them run, jump, and tumble is not only entertaining but also a reminder of the freedom and joy of being fully present in the moment.
Every few months, the farrier comes to care for their hooves, but otherwise, these donkeys live instinctively, guided by nature. And perhaps that’s their greatest lesson for us—to trust our instincts and live simply, as human beings were always meant to.
Healing in the Presence of Animals
Visitors often find that spending time with Osain and Dewi is as healing as any therapy session. Animals have a way of opening hearts, softening worries, and reconnecting us with our inner calm.
At Eva’s Retreat, the donkeys are part of a wider community of animals—including ducks and doves, who will often land gently on your hand for sunflower seeds. Together, they create an atmosphere of peace, laughter, and natural connection that supports the healing journey of everyone who visits.
A Place of Joy, Peace, and Love
The donkeys embody the retreat’s motto: “A place of joy, a place of peace, a place of love.” Their playful nature brings joy, their gentle presence radiates peace, and their companionship reflects the love that flows through Eva’s Retreat.
Whether you’re joining us for a spiritual workshop, a retreat weekend, Reiki training, or a complementary therapy, meeting the donkeys is always part of the experience. They remind us that healing often comes in the simplest forms—being in nature, listening to the wind across the hills, and sharing space with creatures who live with such freedom and authenticity.
Come and Meet Them
Osain and Dewi are waiting to say hello—and so are the doves, ducks, and the peaceful land of Eva’s Retreat itself. When you visit, you won’t just be attending a retreat; you’ll be stepping into a space where nature, animals, and spirit work together to restore balance, joy, and wholeness.
